Island of Light: DEFARA Brings a Sculptural Light Installation to Haikou MixC

Project Category: Public Art / Large-Scale Sculpture
Client: Haikou MixC
Location: Haikou, Hainan, China
Services Provided: Large-Scale Sculpture Fabrication, Fiberglass Fabrication, Structural Fabrication, Surface Finishing, Lighting Integration, Installation Support

Introduction

As commercial spaces evolve into destinations for culture, art, and social interaction, large-scale art installations are becoming an increasingly important part of experiential design. Rather than simply decorating a shopping mall, contemporary installations are expected to create atmosphere, communicate ideas, and encourage visitors to engage with the space.

At Haikou MixC, artist Qian Honglin’s “Island of Light” transforms these ideas into a sculptural environment inspired by the relationship between the sea and the island. Combining flowing sculptural forms, shell-inspired elements, and programmed lighting, the installation creates a dynamic visual experience that changes with light and movement.

For this project, DEFARA translated the artist’s sculptural concept into a large-scale physical installation, combining complex-form fabrication, structural construction, surface finishing, and lighting integration. The result is an immersive artwork that turns the mall’s architectural environment into a contemporary landscape of light, waves, and movement.

The Engineering Challenges

Translating an organic artistic concept into a large physical installation requires a balance between artistic accuracy, structural performance, manufacturing efficiency, and installation requirements.

Fabricating Complex Curved Forms

The central sculpture contains multiple continuous curves and twisting surfaces. Unlike simple geometric structures, these forms require accurate control of curvature and transitions to preserve the original artistic proportions.

The challenge was particularly important because even small deviations in the curved sections could affect the overall rhythm of the sculpture.

Maintaining a Lightweight Visual Appearance

Although the installation has substantial physical dimensions, its visual language is intentionally light and fluid.

The structure needed sufficient strength and stability while avoiding an overly heavy appearance. This required careful consideration of internal support, material thickness, component division, and connection points.

Integrating Lighting into Sculptural Geometry

Lighting was not treated as an independent decorative system. It forms an essential part of the artwork.

The sculptural surfaces needed to accommodate lighting elements while maintaining smooth exterior contours. This meant that fabrication and lighting integration had to be considered together throughout the production process.

Coordinating Multiple Components

The installation includes the central sculptural artwork and multiple surrounding wave-like elements. Each component had to maintain a consistent visual language in terms of proportion, surface quality, color, and illumination.

The final installation therefore depended on accurate fabrication and coordinated assembly across multiple sections.

DEFARA’s Solution

DEFARA approached the project as an integrated creative fabrication process, connecting artistic development with manufacturing and technical execution.

The first step was to understand the sculptural language behind “Island of Light.” Rather than treating the artwork as a collection of isolated shapes, DEFARA focused on preserving the continuity of the flowing lines and the relationship between the central sculpture and surrounding wave forms.

The complex shapes were then translated into production-ready structures suitable for large-scale fabrication.

For the main sculptural element, the production process required careful forming and structural reinforcement to achieve the desired spiral geometry. The surrounding wave components were also developed as individual fabricated sections, allowing the large installation to be manufactured, transported, assembled, and adjusted efficiently.

DEFARA’s role extended beyond basic production. The fabrication process considered:

  • Complex-form sculptural development

  • Structural support and internal reinforcement

  • Modular fabrication

  • Surface preparation and finishing

  • Lighting integration

  • Component assembly

  • Installation coordination

  • Final visual quality control

This integrated approach helped ensure that the final physical installation remained faithful to the artist’s original visual intention while meeting the practical requirements of a large commercial environment.

Project Results

The completed “Island of Light” installation creates a distinctive visual landmark within Haikou MixC.

At the center, the large spiral sculpture rises dramatically from its stepped base, establishing a strong vertical focal point within the atrium. Around it, the wave-like forms extend across the floor, creating a layered landscape that reinforces the overall “sea” and “island” concept.

The white sculptural surfaces and blue illumination create a clean, contemporary atmosphere that complements the architecture of the shopping center.

More importantly, the project demonstrates how large-scale fabrication can help transform an artistic concept into a physical environment.

The installation does not rely solely on scale to attract attention. Its impact comes from the combination of organic form, architectural integration, lighting, and spatial composition.

Visitors encounter the artwork from different levels and circulation routes throughout the mall. Each viewpoint reveals a different relationship between the central sculpture, surrounding waves, light, and architecture.

This creates an experience that changes as visitors move through the space.

Industry Significance

“Island of Light” reflects a broader shift in commercial space design: shopping destinations are increasingly becoming platforms for art, culture, and experiential storytelling.

In this environment, fabrication is no longer simply a downstream manufacturing process. It becomes an important bridge between artistic vision and spatial experience.

For artists and designers, complex concepts often require specialized fabrication capabilities to become physically achievable at architectural scale. Curved forms, large structures, integrated lighting, and public-space requirements all introduce challenges that cannot be solved through visual design alone.

Projects such as “Island of Light” demonstrate the value of collaboration between artists and professional fabrication teams.

The artist provides the conceptual and aesthetic vision. The fabrication partner translates that vision into a buildable, durable, and installable physical structure.

This collaboration enables commercial spaces to move beyond conventional decoration and create environments with stronger cultural and emotional identity.

Conclusion

“Island of Light” transforms the concept of sea, island, and natural harmony into a large-scale sculptural experience at Haikou MixC.

Through flowing shell-inspired forms, layered wave structures, and integrated lighting, the installation creates an environment that connects art with architecture and technology with nature.

For DEFARA, the project demonstrates how complex artistic concepts can be transformed into physical reality through precision fabrication, structural coordination, surface craftsmanship, and technical integration.

The result is more than a sculpture. It is a spatial experience that gives visitors a new way to perceive the commercial environment around them.
